Terra Firma Chambers hosted a Commercial Law conference in Edinburgh on Monday 14th October 2011. The Conference was chaired by Roy Martin QC and featured a range of talks by Terra Firma members on varying aspects of commercial law. Topics covered included legal updates on commercial law and exclusion clauses in respect of the Unfair Contract Terms Act; supply of goods; break options in commercial leases; construction of, and tax clauses in, commercial contracts; liability of directors and parents; partnership liabilities; and vacant commercial premises. In addition, there were two presentations examining Alternative Dispute Resolution in respect of mediation and international arbitration.
The event was well attended with delegates including private client and litigation solicitors from both private and public sectors. A number of spaces were again reserved free of charge for local university teaching staff and diploma students as part of Terra Firma’s pledge to support the future of the Scottish legal profession through our comprehensive seminar and conference programme.
Feedback was very positive with delegates praising the detail and relevance of the talks. The content and presentation were described variously as ‘very engaging’, ‘enjoyable and interesting’, and ‘concise and clear’ with the general consensus characterised in one delegate’s comment: ‘a very relevant and complex area of the law covered very well’.
Emma Potter, practice manager of Terra Firma welcomed the positive response: ‘I am delighted that the conference proved such a great success with so many delegates highlighting the quality of the presentations and the engaging delivery of the speakers. Our members have a wealth of expertise and experience in all aspects of commercial law and this allowed us to present such a varied and interesting programme. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who attended for helping to make the event a success.’
