David Parratt Co-Authors Chapter for Volume 13 of the Compendium of Scottish Ethnology

Terra Firma Chambers’ David Parratt has co-written a chapter for the newly published volume 13 of the Compendium of Scottish Ethnology.

The Compendium is a major project through the European Ethnological Research Centre of the University of Edinburgh and it will comprise fourteen thematically arranged volumes. The aim of the Compendium is to examine the interlocking strands of history and traditional culture that go into the making of a national identity, in an up-to-date synthesis of the current state of knowledge. By bringing together information from a variety of sources, the Compendium not only provides a digest of topics, but also points towards areas for new investigation.

The theme of Volume 13 is "Law".  David and co-author Kenneth Campbell QC have contributed a Chapter on "The Faculty of Advocates" tracing the history of the Faculty and its traditions and procedures. David commented:

"It has been a very enjoyable project delving into the history of the Faculty drawing on old records and dusty documents hidden away for quite some considerable time. Through these we discovered many of the Faculty's traditions - some of which survive into the modern period. The chapter complements other chapters in the Volume in relation to the other branch of the profession and an interesting chapter on Court Dress in Scotland."
