Terra Firma’s Tony MacIver has retired from practice after a distinguished career spanning four decades at the Bar.

Tony called to the Bar in 1986 having previously been a partner at J & F Anderson WS.  During his 30 years in practice, Tony specialised in commercial, company, trusts, planning, environmental issues and charity law.  Latterly he advised extensively on valuation for rating and tax/VAT matters.

From 1991 to 2003 he was Standing Counsel for the Scottish Charities Office, acting in a number of high profile cases during that time.  Recently he has acted in several important valuation for rating cases before the Lands Tribunal for Scotland, and the Lands Valuation Appeal Court.

He was the Vice Chairman of the Trust, Fiduciaries and Executries Bar Group from its date of inception in 2006 until 2012.  He was also a member of the Faculty Commercial Law Group and of the Faculty Tax Law Group.

Terra Firma hosted a reception in the Reading Room on the last day of term to mark Tony’s retiral  It was attended by a range of well-wishers including one of Tony’s Devil Masters, the Hon. Lord Drummond Young, and a number of other senators, colleagues and instructing agents.

Emma Potter, Terra Firma’s Practice Manager, said “Tony was a founding member of Terra Firma and has contributed greatly to the success of the Chambers. It has been a joy to work with him over the last 8 years and he will be sorely missed by us all.”
