Chairman of Terra Firma Chambers Michael Howlin KC will today step down after over six years in the role.  Current Vice-Chairman James Findlay KC will become Chairman with Roddy McIlvride KC taking up the position of Vice-Chairman. 

Michael became stable director in February 2017.  In addition to providing strong leadership and sage advice, he is hugely popular amongst fellow members and clerking staff alike and everyone at TFC would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his dedication and commitment over the past six years.  

James Findlay KC said: “Michael will be much missed, primarily for his wisdom and leadership but also as chambers’ wine connoisseur!” 

Michael said “I have been Chair of Terra Firma Chambers since 2017 and although I have hugely enjoyed holding that position it is now time for me to move on.   During my years as Head of Chambers I have enjoyed an open and friendly relationship with the Stable and its members and have always been afforded unfailing assistance by the Stable officer-bearers and by Emma, Andy, Tracy and Catriona.  It has been a source of great satisfaction to watch stable members’ careers blossoming, to see one colleague after another taking silk and to note the positive reviews that individual members have attracted in Chambers UK and the Legal 500, with the ranks of those gaining such recognition swelling from year to year.  It has also been most gratifying to see Emma and her team receiving well deserved recognition in the legal press for their first-rate service to agents.  The only clouds on the horizon have of course been the untimely deaths of Roy Martin QC and Steven O’Rourke QC, both of whom are greatly missed and are remembered with affection and admiration.  The mantle of office now passes to the immensely competent shoulders of James Findlay KC, who as Vice-Chair has in fact been doing much of the heavy lifting for me during my time in office.  I know that he will bring his special blend of common sense, charm and approachability to his new role.  My thanks go also to Roddy McIlvride KC for agreeing to be the new Vice-Chair.”
