Eleven members of Terra Firma Chambers have been featured in the 2009 edition of the UK Legal 500 which has just been published. The Legal 500 Series provides comprehensive worldwide coverage on legal services providers in over 100 countries. It is used by solicitors, professional advisers and commercial and private clients as a reference point to identify the most suitable counsel for them. The series is widely regarded as offering a definitive judgement of the legal profession.
Terra Firma Chambers members feature prominently under Planning, Environmental and Licensing where Roy Martin QC is described as ‘the consummate professional; he’s at the top of the list of advocates for complex planning matters’ and Douglas Amstrong QC ‘can fairly be said to be in the top rank of planning QCs’. Raymond Docherty QC ‘is incredibly thorough in his preparation with regard to both the law and the technical aspects of the litigation’ for rating and valuation appeals and David Bartos is described as ‘meticulous, his eye for detail is extraordinary’.
In other categories, Rory Anderson QC is commended for his large medical negligence practice whilst Robert Sutherland ‘deals with highly technical matters in agricultural law, so as to enable the client to reach a pragmatic solution’; Iain MacLean is also commended for his expertise in agricultural and crofting matters. Peter Grant-Hutchison is described as the Employment Junior of choice at Terra Firma Chambers, ‘a very knowledgeable and effective advocate’. Philip Simpson ‘gives practical and commercial advice and explains complex tax issues in layman’s term’s and Nicholas Holroyd ‘advises in a structured and methodical manner and considers all the angles’, in estate and trust matters.
James Findlay QC, who also practices at 2-3 Grays Inn Square in London, has been ranked in three categories for his work at the English Bar and is described as ‘first rate’ and able to ‘assimilate legal arguments which are open to debate in newly developing areas of law’. Roy Martin QC has been featured both as a member of Terra Firma Chambers and Landmark Chambers in London.
